Helicopter Information

Desert Sun Helicopter Academy operates a fleet of Robinson helicopters.  There are numerous debates about which type of helicopter is the best trainer, and as many answers as there are debates.   Most experts do agree that if you can fly an R-22, you can fly any helicopter. Developing a “feel” for the controls is crucial in helicopter flight training and no helicopter is better at that than the R-22.  Robinson helicopters are also the most popular training helicopter in the world.  Students who spend a majority of their time in the Robinson helicopters will be able to find more opportunities for employment than those who do not.  It is fairly easy to transition from a Robinson helicopter to another model.  Transitioning into a Robinson from another model can be more difficult as well as not cost effective.

We operate a R-22 Betta II and a R-44 Raven.
As our primary trainer the increased performance of the Betta II are ideal for the high density altitudes encountered in Central Oregon.
We also operate an R-44 Raven I for instrument training.

While most of your time will be spent in a helicopter, DSHA also has a
“Fly it Simulator”.  This state of the art simulator is certified by the FAA and can help save thousands of dollars towards ratings.

Maintenance

DSHA employs some of the top Robinson mechanics in the nation.  Not only do they have years of experience working on Robinson helicopters, but are also involved with the instruction of mechanics at the Robinson factory.  When it comes to maintenance, they are second to none.
